FLASH

Macromedia Flash is ideal for creating professional splash screens, animation and for navigation around sites. Because flash uses vector graphics, the shockwave flash file is much smaller than a conventional animation files (eg gif)
The images to the left are links to Flash Splash screens created by Elmhurst Design. Flash4 can also be used to create interactive games & movies - the link to the right is a large movie (Big Brother).

Java

Java is a programming language that has so many uses including e-commerce, database access and web page interactivity. The Java Applets to the left use random numbers to paint one of three shapes in a parameterised shade/colour in a random position. The top one uses a parameter of blue, the middle one uses light colours and the bottom one uses a parameter of red. The shapes could be changed into any shape.
The Applets on the right are simple scrollers, however by using parameters such as font size, font type, text colour, background colour and speed, this applet can be ported to any website.

The formatting of these pages, images, links, tables etc has been raw coded in HTML using nothing more than a text editor. This way the code is readable, easily updated and the file sizes are much smaller than using HTML generators.

Javascript

Javascript can be used to make a page interactive or to process information on forms. eg. Todays Date using Javascript =
Click on the image on the right to see a javascript pop up box. These can be used for general information, help or answers to questions. Click on the image on the left and follow the instructions for more uses such as holding information or varying text.
Javascript can also be used to create puzzles - see Tile puzzle or Quiz.

Stylesheets

Stylesheets are mainly used to make headings, text and other properties of web pages consistent over a site. The information is held in a single file, so any changes to the style of a site is made in one place, no need to replicate over each page.
Cascading stylesheets (css) are used when different pages need slightly different formatting on some HTML elements. Using stylesheets also reduces the size of pages because most of the HTML elements can be set in the stylesheet and not in the HTML page.
