Liverpool will attempt to sign Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, according to reports. The Champions League winners are attempting to bolster their squad before the start of the new Premier League campaign and they want to bring in a new stopper before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Simon Mignolet is the goalkeeper making way and according to the Liverpool Echo the club feel that the England international is the man they want to replace the outgoing Belgian.
It’s been suggested that Jurgen Klopp was looking to keep Mignolet as a reserve shot stopper, but the 31-year-old wanted to leave to get regular first-team football.
Speculation over Alex McCarthy’s future at St Mary’s continues to grow before this weeks deadline and the 29- year-old was left out of the Saints’ squad for the 2-0 friendly victory against FC Koln which keeps tongues wagging.
The ex Reading and Crystal Palace goalkeeper signed for Southampton in 2016 and has played 48 times. The Guildford goalkeeper has found his positioned threatened recently and may have fewer footballing opportunities to impress with Angus Gunn being used as the preferred choice.
The opportunity to become a Liverpool back up keeper at the newly crowned Champions of Europe may be too good to turn down. Jurgen Klopp’s passion, enthusiasm and care of his players must be a real attraction and for a young player still learning his trade it would surely be to good an offer to dismiss.
