The European transfer window has closed and it has left Paris Saint-Germain player Neymar locked in an unhappy partnership with his club.
Neymar became the world’s most expensive player in 2017 when he left Barcelona for €222million. That wage combined to a huge €700k per week salary have kept him at PSG as a deal to do a player and transfer fee deal failed to materialise.
Barcelona, after completing the transfer of Antoine Griezmann could not afford another Galactico and as Eden Hazard was added to Real Madrids rosta neither club could afford him.
Neymar has a fantastic domestic record with 34 goals from 37 Ligue 1 appearances. Despite the league not being as highly thought of as the Spanish La Liga it is an excellent record but PSG do seek more European success.
Neymar has had his injuries and he has been absent when PSG exited the Champions League in each of the past two seasons. His overall effect on the big European stage is not what PSG predicted and the Brazilian has tried to engineer a move back to his former club.
Tuchel’s challenge now is to try to motivate Neymar and get him ready for the season ahead. They need to win the league again, recapture the Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue titles and progress in Europe. One of PSG’s best 2018-19 performances was against Manchester United but with their second leg defeat at home it is thought that in some games it is more effective when Neymar is left out of the team.
Neymar is an outstanding talent but I feel he is incredibly selfish and not a team player. Whatever he is trying to do succeed, engineering a move out of Paris is not going to go down well with the Parisian fans and he has a lot of work to do to get back in their good graces.
