This is a ground-up problem. Sports in America cost a lot of money, especially if your child is good. The kids who went on to get scholarships or invites to good colleges, a lot of the time, were from rich, two-parent households who could spend $500 to send them to “travel” every month or two. So, like everything else in America, it skews privileged and white.
And then you get to collegiate sports, and unless you are exceptionally good and get some form of scholarship, no regular person can afford Stanford. And you’d have to be wealthy enough not to need to work in school, since most of your free time has to be devoted to sports in order to play professionally.
Edit: this is not to say these women don’t deserve it; the discipline, effort, skill, and courage it takes to play sports professionally cannot be discounted. But the USWNT is the result of a system that requires a lot of investment of both time and money, which is not something disadvantaged people have.
