Inspired by the Besides Olivia Moultrie, who are the youngest players in the NWSL? thread and other Moultrie discussions in r/NWSL recently, I wondered what the numbers were for the top european players.
I looked up the top 10 of the guardian’s top 100 woso players in 2020 on wikipedia to check when they got their club and nationalteam debuts. I did not check exact dates, so it’s basic year math, some players might have gotten their debuts before their birthdays.
The list consists of eight europeans, one australian and one american.
|player||born||club debut||nt debut|
|🇩🇰 Pernille Harder||1992||2007 (15)||2009 (17)|
|🇳🇱 Vivianne Miedema||1996||2011 (15)||2013 (17)|
|🇬🇧 Luzy Bronze||1991||2007 (16)||2013 (22)|
|🇫🇷 Wendie Renard||1990||2006 (16)||2011 (21)|
|🇩🇪 Dzsenifer Marozsán||1992||2007 (15)||2010 (21)|
|🇫🇷 Amandine Henry||1989||2004 (15)||2009 (20)|
|🇦🇺 Sam Kerr||1993||2008 (15)||2009 (16)|
|🇳🇴 Caroline Graham Hansen||1995||2010 (15)||2011 (16)|
|🇺🇸 Julie Ertz||1992||2010/2014 (18/22)||2013 (21)|
|🇫🇷 Delphine Cascarino||1997||2015 (18)||2016 (19)|
Six got their senior club debut at 15, two at 16, the remaining two at 18 … or just one, if Ertz college career don’t count as senior club football.
Two got their senior NT debuts at 16 (CGH/Kerr), another two at 17 (Harder/Miedema), this is not a good comparison with US WNT though, as the competition to get into some of these NT’s are… not as hard as in the US, to put it like that.
I think this is becoming less of a thing in europe over time as clubs become more professional, but we’ll still see the odd young player here and there, especially in smaller leagues, or smaller clubs.
