Harry Redknapp, (the former West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur Manager) recognises that the quality of women’s football has “gone through the roof”. Manchester City take on West Ham United in the Women’s FA Cup final on Saturday 4th May and approximately 50,000 tickets have already been sold.
With the growing familiarity and exposure of female footballers such as Alex Morgan (USA) and Steph Houghton (Manchester City) the sport has seen a huge increase in attendance levels and also popularity in all the European leagues.
Alex Morgan is a superstar in the U.S.A
Redknapp has stated via BetVictor,
“What has happened in recent years to the women’s game has been spectacular,”
“It’s come on leaps and bounds and the standard of the top teams has gone through the roof. The recent attendance records around Europe speak volumes and we should be in for a superb summer with the Women’s World Cup (in France).
“As for Saturday’s FA Cup final, it’s going to be another wonderful day at Wembley and I’m sure the fans will be there in numbers watching on.”
Steph Houghton- Manchester City and England
A glowing endorsement from a man who had much success both as a player and a manager for many years. Redkapp, is an expert in spotting talent and in my opinion the female game in the (U.K) needs more established male football personalities to continue to drive the game forward and generate interest in the domestic leagues.
